Vermont lets you choose how to show a year of progress — and a parent portfolio is one of five equally valid assessment options. If you go that route, keep an actual portfolio:
What to keep
Work samples across Vermont's six required subjects (worksheets, writing, projects, photos of hands-on work)
If you use the parent-portfolio assessment: a year-end summary plus at least 4 work samples(required for that option)
A record of instructional time toward the 175-day minimum
Your chosen annual assessment(test result, certified-teacher letter, portfolio, online academy grades, or GED-prep evidence)
Your enrollment-notice confirmation from the Vermont Agency of Education
Your Vermont filing timeline
At least 10 business days before startingFile your annual enrollment notice with the Vermont Agency of Education.
All year longKeep work samples current and log days toward the 175-day minimum.
End of the yearComplete your chosen annual assessment — if you use the parent portfolio, assemble a summary plus at least 4 work samples.
Before next yearFile your enrollment notice again — it is an annual notice.
